Troubleshooting
Check Engine, common errors, and what to do about them.
Check Engine
Profile → Check Engine runs a quick diagnostic: bundled tools present and working, disk access permissions, connection to your account, and the app version. Green means fine. Anything else comes with a fix button or an explanation.
Common issues
“Overcrank can’t open this folder” macOS needs to grant the app access to removable drives and some folders. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders (or Full Disk Access) and enable Overcrank, then try again.
A transfer verified red One or more files didn’t match after copying. Open the transfer in History for the list. Usually a flaky card reader or cable; re-copy those files. Don’t format the card until it verifies green.
Cruise Control isn’t running The app must be open. Check the job isn’t paused, and that the source drive is connected (the activity log says “source missing” when it isn’t).
Crankshaft says it’s out of credits The message tells you your options: buy a top-up, upgrade, or add your own AI key. See Account & billing.
“Your team’s AI key isn’t working” Your own AI key was turned off, replaced, or ran out of quota with your AI provider. A team admin can open Settings → AI key (or click Fix key) and paste a working key. Overcrank won’t switch to its own credits on its own.
“This Mac was signed out” Someone signed this Mac out from the portal, or the device limit was reached and another sign-in replaced it. Sign in again; see Devices.
“AI is temporarily unavailable” The AI vendor is overloaded or down. Overcrank already retried and switched to a backup model if one is configured. Wait a minute and try again.
Readout can’t read a file The file may still be copying, or it’s a format Readout doesn’t recognize. Try again once the copy is complete.
Getting help
Email support@overcrank.ai with the app version (from Check Engine) and, if it’s about a transfer, the line from History. Screenshots help.
Reset
Profile → App data shows what the app stores locally (transfer history, Cranky memory, Crankshaft sessions) and lets you clear each one. Your footage is never touched by any reset.
Something missing or wrong? Email support@overcrank.ai.
